In the name of Wellness

In the name of Wellness is a longterm project that documents the human cost and environmental consequences of superfood crops investigating the phenomenon of environmental neocolonialism, its mechanism and its consequences on the ecosystems and local population to support the market for a diet that is defined as healthy in Western countries.

How these superfood crops crops contribute to Latin America’s environmental neocolonialism?
In recent years the demand for these resources is always increasing, pushing Western investors towards a greater exploitation that risks irreversibly ruining the environmental balance of those areas and of the entire planet.
Products like avocado, soya, quinoa or acai are now commonly used on our tables. Foods considered the basis for a healthy diet but the obsession with everything that is healthy often has a human cost that no one imagines. Today, just like over 500years ago, colonialism is still alive, although it adopts different forms and takes different names.

The entire project has been granted from the PULITZER CENTER on crisis reporting and currently includes four chapters:
- Purple blood (BRAZIL) on the human and environmental consequences of the intensive açaí monoculture in the Amazon region.
- Green gold and dry earth (CHILE) on the serious consequences on the environment and people of avocado monoculture.
- The golden grain of the Andes (BOLIVIA) on the social and environmental impact of the quinoa monoculture.
- The bitter harvest (ARGENTINE) on the human and environmental cost of the global soy empire.

Vivir Para Contarlo / Live to tell

Vivir Para Contarlo / Live to tell is an ongoing long-term project about feminicide and violence against women.

Starting from Argentine, a country that in recent years has experienced an increase of the violence against women, The Goal is to continue documenting several issues closely linked to gender violence in other countries in the world where the situation is alarming making known to the wider audience of people the enormity of the phenomenon in its various aspects. Raising awareness of the problem is the most effective immediate solution to encourage more women to come forward to tell their stories and put pressure on governments.

The methane great escape

To achieve climate neutrality by 2050, Europe must prioritize reducing methane emissions, a greenhouse gas 80 times more potent than CO2. In the European power sector, coal mines, both active and abandoned, are the main source of methane emissions. In 2021, EU coal mines emitted 908 thousand tonnes of methane, equal to the annual CO2 emissions of 43 million cars. This surpasses emissions from oil and gas combined. The European Commission must focus on reducing methane emissions from coal mines, especially during and after their operation. However, the current Methane Regulation goal has been weakened, reducing the target from a 70% reduction by 2040 to 34%.

The objective of this work is to raise awareness about the socio-environmental impacts of methane emissions from the coal sector and the urgency of reducing these emissions in order to address global warming.

The investigation has been currently conducted in Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Greece, and Spain.

The entire project has been granted from the JOURNALISM FUND EUROPE on crisis reporting and has been currently conducted in Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Greece, and Spain.

THE METHANE GREAT ESCAPE IS A PROJECT MADE BY RONIN (Alfredo Bosco, Giacomo d'Orlando and Karl Mancini) in collaboration with the journalists Simone Fant and Anca Iosif.
