In the name of Wellness
In the name of Wellness is a longterm project that documents the human cost and environmental consequences of superfood crops investigating the phenomenon of environmental neocolonialism, its mechanism and its consequences on the ecosystems and local population to support the market for a diet that is defined as healthy in Western countries.
How these superfood crops crops contribute to Latin America’s environmental neocolonialism?
In recent years the demand for these resources is always increasing, pushing Western investors towards a greater exploitation that risks irreversibly ruining the environmental balance of those areas and of the entire planet.
Products like avocado, soya, quinoa or acai are now commonly used on our tables. Foods considered the basis for a healthy diet but the obsession with everything that is healthy often has a human cost that no one imagines. Today, just like over 500years ago, colonialism is still alive, although it adopts different forms and takes different names.
The entire project has been granted from the PULITZER CENTER on crisis reporting and currently includes four chapters:
- Purple blood (BRAZIL) on the human and environmental consequences of the intensive açaí monoculture in the Amazon region.
- Green gold and dry earth (CHILE) on the serious consequences on the environment and people of avocado monoculture.
- The golden grain of the Andes (BOLIVIA) on the social and environmental impact of the quinoa monoculture.
- The bitter harvest (ARGENTINE) on the human and environmental cost of the global soy empire.
