La Revolucion VerdeThe Fight for the legalization of abortion in Argentina
The historical struggle for the legalization of abortion in Argentine that started in 2003 with the campaign for free, safe and legal abortion campaign characterized by the green panuelo which has become a symbol for millions of Argentine women who fight for the right to decide over their bodies. Symbol handed down to all countries where the 'Ni una Menos' movement has spread. The struggle for legal abortion in recent years has seen a great surge across Latin America where only Uruguay and the Federal District of Mexico City have recognized this right and effectively penalized illegal abortion, a practice that kills thousands of women on the continent. In fact, abortion is a practice widely used in Argentina but accessible only to the highest classes that I can afford private clinics that maintain reservations or operations abroad. In Argentina, three times as many US abortions are recorded every year, the number of illegal abortions and the number of deaths resulting from this practice are very high. After the great illusion of 2018 where the law historically passed to the Chamber of Deputies but was later rejected by the Senate, the presidency of Alberto Fernandez, who took the leadership of the country in October, 2019 opened to the legalization of abortion and, despite the terrible difficulties of a year characterized by the Covid-19 pandemic which further worsened the already very heavy economic crisis that the country is going through in recent years, the project was historically approved again at the Chamber of Deputies On Dec, 10,2020 and finally also in the Senate on Dec, 30,2020 after a heated debate that lasted for an entire night with millions of women anxiously waiting in the streets. What happened in Argentina can be considered the real fuse that causes a fire in all of Latin America where already in other countries it is now pushing to follow the same path taken by Argentina in a process of change that seems completely irreversible. |
